LED bar above windshield questions.

Good evening forum, so my next project will be adding another LED bar above my windshield. I have a friend who builds off road suspension building me some "bolt on" door sill mounts and doing the wiring, but I have a few questions.

1. The windshield is about 50.5" wide, should I go with a curved led bar? Or a flat led bar?

2. Should I mount the bar level with my roof line? Or sight lay above the roof line?

The mounts will be custom so placement won't be an issue, I'm just trying to get the ideas in before I drop the jeep off.

Thanks!

Thanks for the input, I tried to find a 50" curved bar but could only find a 53" or a 49" bar. I'm going to go with the 49" size. They have a flood/spot combo beam that I'm looking at now. I'm working with the fab guy now to get the correct dimensions.

Any other input would be great, thanks!

I ordered the 49" bar and the wiring harness today. I should have everything by next week and the jeep goes to the fabricator in June, he's booked up until then. I'll keep you guys posted though about him putting a mounting kit together for anyone who is interested. Also, I'm gonna have him take a look at the roof rails to see if he can make a super low profile basket while he has it. I like the idea of holding cargo on the roof, but I'm not a fan of the high 4"-5" sides of the current production baskets.

Let me know how this pans out. I want to do something like this for sure. If he could make more id definitely be interested in purchasing some.

I'll keep everyone posted once the jeep gets dropped off. I LED bar came in today, it's huge compared to the 20" bar in my front bumper. Pics attached!

You will have to let people know if it creates any more wind noise like the crossbars do and drive people crazy....I like how that is going to look and would be a neat one to have over my 17 inch I just ordered for my RRO Stage 1 bumper

We finished up the led bar mounts and got the bar on the jeep today. The mount are 3" and 3/16" thick, we coated them with spray on bed liner and bolted them to the door sill with 1/4" bolts. The front and back of the door sill is lined with silicon so there aren't any leaks and we made reliefs in the weather stripping to clear to bolt heads. Pictures below:

Wired everything up tonight, smooth install and I have to say the LED bar is BRIGHT! The curved design throws a great light pattern. Pictures below:

Below is a link for a similar LED bar like my bumper has. Though my bumper LED is 100% "flood" pattern. I had to trim some plastic away from the lower bumper for the bar to fit flush and I used a 3/8" drill to put a hole through the metal bumper and used 3 1/2" bolts to secure it. It's very solid, it took a few trips to Lowes to get the correct parts, but it all came out decent.

I tried to keep it as close as possible without it hanging over the front window. It sits about 2", maybe a tad less away from where the roof meets the front window. Hope this helps!

Question: Will you have to cover these "off-road" lights while on the public roadway, like we see on other driving lights? Or is that a state-by-state requirement?

is there an actual law stating they have to be covered? I thought it was just no overhead lights in city limits, and no bumper lights over 50 watts (halogen) Then again, I drove my giant Ford around with my 100 watt KC lights on all the time. 1-because it was a monster truck, so why the hell not, and 2- the stock headlamps housings were garbage and barely produced a glow the truck was so tall.

Looks good, I'm currently looking at some led set ups and I really like the look of the top light and the bumper light. Do you drive on the road with the bumper light on? I as because the stock dogs are basically worthless, and I'd like to add to them or replace them.

Thanks! I wouldn't recommend driving with any led bar ON while on a normal road. They are extremely bright and throw a very wide pattern of light that oncoming traffic wouldn't be too happy about. I only use them off road due to they're brightness. I'm sure you could add some smaller halogen lights to the bumper and have them aimed in such a way so you could keep them on while driving on normal roads, but as for LED bars, best to keep them turned off until you hit the dirt.

I meant the stock fog lights, not the headlamps. The stock fog lights are not that great... :) they seem to me to be just fashion prices that only add the look of a fog light while doing very little in the way of improving visibility.

Wouldn't know too much about the foglights, but I have noticed they don't seem to be too bright. Could be part of the reason TJN installed yellow aftermarket fogs when he still had his 2010 and added the option.

There's is definitely wind noise at freeway speeds and if there is a cross wind while driving. There's always a trade off with comfort and looking good right? Haha. I'm going to be swapping out the pillar mounting bolts to some flatter "carriage" type bolt heads to see if I can get a better seal in between the weather stripping. I run it through a car wash the other day though and it doesn't leak, so that's good.

As far as glare, there isn't any. I was worried about it reflecting on the hood, but it's mounted high enough so it doesn't do any of that.
